Caicos Islands Trip Planner
Welcome to Caicos Islands!
The Caicos Islands have been governed by a host of countries but it was the islands’ earliest inhabitants, the Lucayan Indians, which gave them their name–“Caya Hico,” meaning string of islands. Today, the Turks and Caicos Islands, often referred to as TCI, are an independent British Crown Colony and are becoming one of the world’s sought-after Caribbean destinations.
Separated from the Turks by the Columbus Passage, the Caicos chain consists of six main islands and several smaller ones–all situated just southeast of the Bahamas. Providenciales is the country’s most populated island and is its principal tourist destination. Locally known as Provo, it is home to several resorts as well as world-class diving. The islands’ deep turquoise waters play host to some of the most spectacular coral reefs in the Caribbean and a multitude of sea life. Provo also plays host to an annual eight-day music and cultural festival, which boasts a star-studded line-up of non-stop entertainment surrounded by white sandy beaches, lush green landscapes and friendly island attitudes. Another highlight is Cheshire Hall, a 200-year old former cotton plantation, which offers a glimpse into the island’s farming history. Further west, the largest island of the archipelago–Middle Caicos–boasts the chain’s most dramatic scenery with a coastline of cliffs, offshore cays and caves, including the region’s largest limestone cave system at Conch Bar.
